Material Lift, also called freight platform lift, is designed based on hoisting and lowering mechanism. It can be classified as an elevator. It incorporates a car that moves within a guide system and serves two or more landings in order to transport material loaded/ unloaded either manually or automatically. Material lifts without an automatic transfer device can be either Type A or Type B. Type A is which that permits no person to ride and Type B is one that permits only authorized personnel to ride. Type B material lift moves material without automatic transfer devices and is limited as follows:

Only authorized people can access it
Maximum speed of 0.15 metres per second
Maximum 7,600 millimetres travel
Constant-pressure control devices for operation
Upper limit of travel can be either level with the top floor; or the level with the top landing, where no floor is penetrated
It is permitted to serve one or more intermediate landings. And the landings must have approved interlocks and hoistway.
